The Smith Family is a national children’s education charity that works with children and young people experiencing poverty to overcome their circumstances and reach their full potential by providing holistic, long-term support for their education.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated recent graduate or junior consultant to apply their expertise to help The Smith Family (TSF) maximise the value, and manage risks associated with data. As part of a small, passionate and experienced team, you will provide operational, project and administrative support in the development and implementation of a practical Data Governance Program, making it easy for our people to understand and incorporate good data practices and behaviours into their everyday work. Your typical day could include:

  • Supporting the design, testing, and delivery of Data Governance Program initiatives such as data quality, data retention management and data risk management
  • Work with internal stakeholders to understand problems, define use cases and hypotheses, and co-design analytical solutions
  • Assisting with implementation of the Data Owner and Steward Model, including onboarding and training
  • Conducting research and assisting with stakeholder engagement to develop clear, practical policies, processes, and standards promoting good data practices
  • Creating, deploying, and maintaining tools for managing and reporting on data governance, quality, and compliance
  • Development and delivery of communication materials and educational content to improve awareness and adoption of data policies, practices, and tools.

About you

As well as a passion for community, and drive to deliver user friendly, intuitive services and products, you will bring the following:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Information Management, Data Science, Computer Science or Software Engineering or related fields
  • Strong research, analytical, and data visualisation skills.
  • Excellent communication (including writing and editing) abilities; presenting complex ideas simply, providing actionable insights and influencing stakeholders when required
  • Creativity and visual design, with skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, ideally an aptitude for using tools like Figma, Adobe, or Sketch for prototyping and process simplification (highly desirable)
  • Ability to learn, train users, and administer data governance tools, with SQL skills being a plus
  • Strong problem-solving skills to assess data needs, identifying data  risks, and develop easy to adopt solutions
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to shift and juggle between tasks and projects according to evolving priorities
  • Willingness to build knowledge and learn new skills through self-learning
  • Capability to thrive in a team environment, but also to work autonomously: organising your own day, problem solving and adapting when things don’t go to plan.
